Auckland FC vs Wellington Phoenix: The Rivalry Heats Up
The A-League is abuzz with anticipation as the newest sporting rivalry in Aotearoa writes its second chapter this weekend. The Wellington Phoenix, determined to spoil the party of the current A-League kings, Auckland FC, come north to conquer the opposition.
The Stage is Set
With Auckland FC warning the Phoenix that they will face a barrage of banter from fans at Mount Smart, Wellington are embracing the chance to end the dream start. The Phoenix defender Corban Piper said they are looking to smash the Auckland team and get rid of their winning streak.
“I can speak on behalf of all the boys,” Piper said. “We’re pretty keen to smash them and get rid of that winning streak.”
Auckland’s Unbeaten Streak
Across their first five appearances, Auckland FC are sitting unbeaten at the top of the table without a goal conceded. The team is confident in their abilities, but the Phoenix are determined to spoil the party.
Revenge is driving the men from the capital, with Auckland having taken the honours in their opening encounter at the Caketin last month. Midfielder Kazuki Nagasawa concurred, saying that they are really excited about this game and looking forward to the chance of revenge.
“We are really [excited] about this game, and looking forward to the chance of revenge,” Nagasawa said.
The Rivalry is Personal
For Piper, the rivalry is a bit closer to home. He believed that he would have been part of Auckland FC but for their team policy, which meant there wasn’t room for him as a 10. Wellington Phoenix looked outside the academy and slotted him in.
“It was initially Auckland FC for me,” Piper said. “I didn’t really think about Wellington Phoenix, because I thought they were pretty Academy focused. So, I was looking at Auckland FC, but there just wasn’t room in Auckland FC for me as a 10 and thankfully, Wellington Phoenix looked outside the academy and slotted me in.”

The final showdown between Auckland FC and Wellington Phoenix is set to be an exciting one. With kick-off on Saturday 7 December at 5pm at Go Media Mt Smart Stadium, fans are eagerly anticipating the match.
