Disney’s Moana 2 reo Māori Film Premiere Celebrates Language, Culture, and Dreams

The premiere of Disney’s Moana 2 reo Māori, the second installment in the Moana franchise, was held on November 18 in Auckland. The event marked a milestone moment for New Zealand, as it became the first Disney film to be released with subtitles in te reo Māori, the country’s indigenous language.

Moana 2 reo Māori is not just another installment in a popular franchise; it represents a significant step forward in promoting and preserving New Zealand’s cultural heritage. The film’s creators worked closely with Māori writers, directors, and linguists to ensure that the story was told accurately and respectfully.

The premiere brought together Aotearoa’s finest talents, including actors Temuera Morrison, Jaedyn Randell, and others who voiced characters in the film. Director Tweedie Waititi emphasized the importance of promoting te reo Māori and celebrating the language’s significance in New Zealand culture.

“We want [tamariki] to whakamāori the world,” said Waititi during his speech at the premiere. “If it’s not in Māori, then translate it. If it’s not in Māori, reimagine it.”

Moana 2 reo Māori also aims to inspire young people to chase their dreams and pursue their aspirations. The cast and crew believed that the film would encourage rangatahi to embrace their te reo Māori language and culture, showcasing its beauty and significance.

“This is a momentous occasion for our people,” said music co-director Pere Wihongi. “We are getting attacked as iwi Māori. But what are we going to do? Sit down and take it or pivot? This is one of those pivots where we show our people there are other huarahi.”

Moana 2 reo Māori opens nationally in Aotearoa cinemas from November 28.
