SkyCity’s International Convention Centre: A New Beginning After Fire and Financial Struggles
SkyCity, a leading entertainment company in New Zealand, is finally nearing completion of its highly anticipated International Convention Centre (ICC) in Auckland. The project has been plagued by delays, cost overruns, and even a fire that forced its original opening to be postponed. However, with the new CEO, Jason Walbridge, at the helm, SkyCity is looking to put its past struggles behind it and make a fresh start.
In an exclusive interview, SkyCity’s chairman, Julian Cook, gave Markets with Madison a first look inside the ICC project, discussing the challenges the company has faced and how they plan to overcome them. The convention centre was originally set to cost around $750 million and open in 2019, but it has since taken on a life of its own, with costs ballooning to over $1 billion.
“It’s no secret that Fletcher [Building] have run over cost on that project,” Cook told Markets with Madison. “It’s no secret that historically, there have been significant issues for Fletchers on that site and it’s also no secret that that has cost us a lot of money, the delays which have happened.”
The financial damage was fixed by SkyCity, but the company lost out on years of earnings from events at the site. Cook acknowledged that the project had been a costly mistake, but expressed confidence in the new management team.
“However, credit where credit is due, for the last two to three years, Fletchers have been running a good operation over there,” he said.
The ICC was expected to welcome 33,000 international visitors annually, generating significant revenue for SkyCity. However, investors had lost confidence in the company’s ability to deliver on its promises, leading to a suspension of dividends and regulatory issues that forced the closure of its Auckland casino this year.
Cook was candid about his company’s past struggles, stating, “I think we deserved it, to be blunt. We will get over these regulatory issues and we will have a much better business for it.”
The new management team, led by CEO Jason Walbridge, is working tirelessly to put SkyCity back on track. The ICC project is finally nearing completion, with Cook revealing that the convention centre was “really exciting” and would be a “game changer” for the business.
“We’re really excited by it. We think it’s going to be a game changer for this business, but actually for Auckland generally,” Cook said.
The convention centre will feature cutting-edge technology and sustainable design, making it an attractive venue for international events and conferences. SkyCity expects the ICC to generate significant revenue and help turn around its financial fortunes.
In the interview with Markets with Madison, Cook took us inside the troubled ICC project, showcasing the progress made by the new management team. He also discussed the company’s plans to improve its compliance issues and regulatory problems, which had led to a crackdown on the industry.
The future looks bright for SkyCity, with the ICC set to become a flagship asset for the entertainment company. Will it be enough to restore investor confidence and put SkyCity back on top? Only time will tell.
