Large Scrub Fire in Canterbury Brought Under Control

A significant scrub fire in Bridge Hill, near Craigieburn, has been tackled by firefighters, although strong winds have hampered efforts to control and extinguish the blaze.

A school group was evacuated from their camp as a precaution and are all safe, and well away from the fire, FENZ said. The 2ha fire is located near State Highway 73, but smoke has not yet affected the road.

Firefighting Efforts

Four helicopters and seven firetrucks were on the scene, working to contain the fire. However, strong winds have made it challenging for crews to gain control over the blaze.

A spokesperson said, “Strong winds are hampering efforts to control and extinguish the fire.” The NZTA Waka Kotahi Agency is advising motorists to expect delays through SH73 as the fire is tackled.

Evacuation Order

A school group was evacuated from their camp in Bridge Hill as a precautionary measure. Fortunately, all members of the group are safe and have been relocated away from the fire.

The evacuation order was put in place to ensure the safety of those in the affected area. FENZ confirmed that the students were safely transported and were “well away from the fire.”
