Tahinga Hina Appointed as Tumu Whakarae for Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi
Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi, a prominent iwi agency in Auckland, has elected Tahinga Hina as its new tumu whakarae. Hina’s appointment marks a significant milestone in the history of the iwi, as he becomes the first descendant from Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi to hold the position.
The Rise of Tahinga Hina
Born and raised in Auckland, Hina is a descendant of Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi. He returned home to Whanganui in 2018, reconnecting with his marae, eventually becoming a trustee for Paakaraka Marae. By 2021, he was representing Paakaraka on Te Paepae o Te Kaahui o Rauru – the trust board that brings together two uri (descendants) from each marae.
A New Era for Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi
Hina’s appointment is seen as a significant step forward for Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi. “We are Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi. Kiitahi is what’s important,” he said in an interview. “I know it’s my responsibility to maintain the relationships that those before me have established.”
Hina’s focus will be on strengthening the paepae, supporting new representatives, and fostering informed and inclusive decision-making across the iwi. “Creating a balance and ensuring no one is left behind is important for me in this role,” he emphasized.
A Legacy of Leadership
Hina replaces Mike Neho, who was unable to be re-elected after serving two terms as chairperson. Neho’s leadership had seen the establishment of initiatives bolstering iwi development, including investments in advanced technology, cultural opportunities, and governance capability. His commitment to revitalising te reo Māori and protecting traditional knowledge has ensured the preservation and growth of Ngaa Rauru’s unique identity for future generations.
A New Chapter for Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi
As Hina takes on his new role, he is committed to building on the foundation laid by Neho. “It has been an honour to serve as tumu whakarae for Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi for the past six years,” Hina said. “We have built a strong foundation over the years, guided by our tikanga and values, and those lessons will continue to steer us toward a prosperous future.”
In conclusion, Tahinga Hina’s appointment as tumu whakarae for Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi marks an exciting new chapter in the iwi’s history. With his strong leadership skills, commitment to preserving traditional knowledge, and focus on inclusivity and balance, Hina is well-equipped to guide Ngaa Rauru Kiitahi towards a prosperous future.
