Whipps also commented on New Zealand’s stance on fossil fuel subsidies at the global level, while supporting the oil and gas industry domestically. When asked about this apparent contradiction, he replied: “All governments have to help their people.” He added that it is crucial for governments to provide financing for their citizens, regardless of where the oil or gas comes from.

Whipps acknowledged New Zealand’s efforts in renewable energy, such as wind farms and solar farms. However, he emphasized that raising ambitions in this area would be necessary.
