Sir John Key: China is a trading partner worth fighting for

Sir John Key Calls for New Zealand to Emphasize Relationship with China Amid Global Turbulences

Former Prime Minister Sir John Key has urged New Zealanders to celebrate their strong relationship with China and work towards fostering trade between the two nations. Speaking at the “Vision 2025” business event in Auckland, Key emphasized that New Zealand’s economic success was heavily reliant on its connection with China.

The Relationship Between China and the US

Key stated that the relationship between China and the United States was deteriorating, but believed that New Zealand should not follow suit. Instead, he suggested that the country should make its own decisions regarding its foreign policy. Key also highlighted the importance of New Zealand’s economy being strong, which he attributed to China’s presence.

“Hundreds of millions of consumers who are getting wealthier who want to buy the things we produce, and that is called China,” Key said. “If you were lying in bed at night and you say to yourself, what is going to make the waka go faster? Here’s a clue.”

Supporting Trade with China

Key advocated for New Zealand to support China’s entry into CPTPP (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership). This agreement aims to foster trade among participating countries. Key also emphasized the need for open communication between New Zealand and China, particularly on issues such as human rights.

“Just because the rest of the world or some countries like the United States wants to have a perspective doesn’t mean that we can’t have a good relationship with China,” Key said.

A Strong Relationship for Mutual Benefits

Key stressed that having a strong relationship with China could also allow New Zealand to engage in open and honest conversations on matters of dispute. This, he believed, would be beneficial for both nations.

“Let’s just celebrate what we’ve got, and that is the largest trading partner this country owns, and that, in my opinion, is worth fighting for.”

New Zealand’s Foreign Policy Independence

Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins echoed Key’s views on foreign policy. He emphasized the need for New Zealand to make decisions based on what is in its best interests.

“It shouldn’t be dictated by any other country around the world, and I think that we should strenuously avoid the polarization of geopolitical politics and the pressure that we may see to pick aside.”

Business Insights from New Zealand Enterprises

Multiple New Zealand enterprises shared their experiences doing business with China. They highlighted the importance of adaptability and discussed topics such as climate change, new energy, and sustainability.

A Charity Auction at Vision 2025

This year’s event also featured a charity auction that raised funds for Well Foundation and the National Youth Theatre. The “Vision 2025” business event is the fourth of its kind and has been held sporadically since 2019, restarting in 2022.

In conclusion, Sir John Key emphasized the significance of New Zealand’s relationship with China amidst global tensions. By fostering trade and open communication, both nations can reap mutual benefits and strengthen their partnership.
