Papua New Guinea Boosts Police Funding to Enhance Safety

The Papua New Guinea government has announced a significant increase in funding for the police force, aimed at making the country safer and more equipped to tackle modern law enforcement challenges. The allocation of additional funds will enable higher wages, increased numbers, and improved resources for the police.

Papua New Guinea’s Police Minister Peter Tsiamalili Jr expressed his gratitude for the government’s support, stating that the increased spending will make a tangible difference in the country’s safety.

Funding Breakdown

The new Budget allocates K158.6 million to the police force, representing a 67 percent increase from last year. This will enable the police to offer higher wages, with a 19 percent increase, allowing them to grow their force by 10,000 by 2030.

According to Treasurer Ian Ling-Stuckey, the government is committed to supporting the police force’s plans for strengthening and modernizing its operations.

Enhanced Resources

In addition to increased funding for personnel wages, the new Budget also allocates more resources for critical equipment such as vehicles, fuel, housing, office accommodation, and ammunition.

Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC), a business analysis company, has given the Budget its approval, citing robust GDP growth projections of 4.9 percent this year and 4.7 percent next year.

Social Development Focus

The allocation of over a third of spending to health and education reflects a strong commitment to social development and human capital investment.

“This move marks a significant shift towards a more balanced and sustainable economy,” said PwC.

Conclusion

The Papua New Guinea government’s decision to increase funding for the police force demonstrates its dedication to enhancing public safety. With increased resources and higher wages, the police will be better equipped to tackle modern challenges and contribute to a safer society.
