Overnight curfew lifted in New Caledonia

New Caledonia Lifts Curfew After Months of Tensions

The High Commission of New Caledonia has announced the lifting of its curfew, marking a significant step towards returning to normalcy after months of unrest in the region.

Background and History of the Curfew

The curfew was first implemented in May following riots that broke out in the country. Since then, it has been adjusted multiple times as authorities have sought to balance public safety with the need to restore order.

French High Commissioner Louis Le Franc made the decision to lift or relax certain measures based on continuous assessments of risks. “There are still some sensitive areas, but we were able to restore public order,” he said.

Changes to Firearm and Ammunition Laws

The lifting of the curfew is accompanied by changes to laws related to firearms and ammunition. The ban on possession, transportation, and use of these items has been relaxed, although there are still some restrictions in place.

Residents are now allowed to possess and transport small calibre ammunition, but hunting permits remain restricted until further notice. “Whatever the number of detained weapons,” there is a limit of 50 per month for large calibre ammunition.

Restrictions on Public Meetings and Alcohol Sales

Public meetings such as rallies and parades remain banned in the Greater Nouméa area, although open-air markets and sports events are exempt. The sale of alcohol has returned to normal hours, but there is still a limit on the quantity that can be purchased.

“New Caledonians’ security remains a priority,” said Le Franc. “If the situation deteriorates once again, I reserve the entire right and capacity to reintroduce earlier measures.”

Next Steps and Reassessments

The new measures will remain in force until 5 January, 2025. The situation will be re-assessed on December 20, with a possible relaxation of restrictions just before Christmas.

“We are making progress,” said Le Franc. “But we must continue to work together to ensure the security and well-being of all New Caledonians.”

Conclusion

The lifting of the curfew is a significant step towards restoring normalcy in New Caledonia. However, authorities remain vigilant and will continue to take steps to ensure public safety.
